Compassionate Practice Charts ❤️ - free PDF download
What if your goal is not to practice more this month? What if your goal is to keep a star chart? 🤯
I started keeping a star chart my senior year of college when I had a lot of resistance to building the habit of daily movement. I kept the bar pretty low: pretty much any time I literally put my foot inside the gym or stepped onto a trail, I counted it as exercise. The satisfaction I felt seeing my star chart fill up, the daily ritual of shutting my bedroom door before bed (where I’d hung the chart) and filling it in was so rewarding. I kept the promise I made to myself, and for almost every day that semester, I moved my body.
Star charts are consistently how I’ve held myself accountable, from practicing music to kundalini yoga kriyas. But I noticed when I tried them with my students, sometimes they would forget to update the chart. Or they would miss huge chunks of practice days and no longer wish to keep track. Which is why…
I love to encourage my students to keep compassionate star charts.
If you practice, you add a star! ⭐️
If you forget to practice or don't have time to practice, it's okay -- add a heart. ❤️
We are practicing the daily habit of keeping a star chart, not the habit of practicing music. Our music practice routine naturally becomes a byproduct of tracking progress. What we pay attention to grows.
A lot of students jump to the goal of rehearsing music and then feel discouraged when they forget, and stop tracking their practice altogether. It doesn’t have to be this way!
YOU CAN START SMALL.
Practice keeping a daily habit of filling in your chart (aka building the neural pathway of visually keeping track of your progress) and you will see your practice efforts grow!!
